Hoodoo Series: Marie Laveau

Hello. For this week’s article, I want to write about a prominent figure in the Hoodoo spiritual practice.

I am going to start a series that details the spirits and spiritual workers of Hoodoo who have played a major role in making the practice what it is today. I believe this series will be helpful so that new workers can learn who to work with to further their spiritual development.

Marie Laveau, also known as Marie Laveaux, is one of the most prominent Hoodoo workers in New Orleans. Marie was born on September 10, 1801, and she was a free woman. She was a Creole who did many things—she was a Hoodoo worker, a herbalist, and a midwife. Throughout the South, but especially in New Orleans, she was respected as a Hoodoo worker. She was both feared and revered by the people of New Orleans.

Some of her most impressive works involved spirit communication and divination. It was also alleged that, through her ownership of a hair salon—frequented by many different guests—Marie would receive valuable information. The workers would listen in on conversations and relay what they heard to her, which she could then use to help or advise others.

Marie Laveau is one of the most prominent spiritual workers of all time. In many different texts, some describe her as a Hoodoo worker, while others say she practiced Voodoo. It is my belief that she was a Hoodoo worker, but the people who wrote about her often used the terms Hoodoo and Voodoo interchangeably. Her spirit and spiritual knowledge made her one of the most respected spiritual workers in New Orleans and throughout the South. She was also known for helping prisoners and offering aid to those in need.

Marie Laveau is someone people look to for strength and assistance in their spiritual work. Many will ask for her help, and she is known to aid those who sincerely seek her. There are countless stories about Marie Laveau—some true, others perhaps embellished—but she remains one of the most remarkable figures to come from New Orleans.

Now, I want to talk about some spiritual practices you can use to connect with Marie Laveau so that she can assist you. I will also discuss offerings you can use to invoke her spirit.

If possible, visit her alleged burial site at St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans. You can leave offerings and ask her for assistance. However, I must caution you—as with any spirit—do not begin by asking for favors. First, build a relationship. Give offerings once or twice without asking for anything in return. During this time, research and learn about her life and energy. Once you have built that connection, you may ask for her help, and if she chooses to assist you, she will.

Another way to connect with Marie Laveau is to create an altar dedicated to her. This is a great idea because altars serve as sacred spaces to honor spirits, give offerings, and perform spiritual work. In the case of Marie Laveau, you can include items such as flowers (roses), Florida Water, tobacco, rosary beads (since Marie was Catholic as well as a Voodoo practitioner), rum, and a statue or picture of her. You should also include a glass of water, which you will change weekly.

Once you have gathered these items, construct your altar, give offerings, and ask for signs to see if she is receptive to working with you. If everything aligns, you can begin your work with her.

This is everything you can do to start building a spiritual relationship with Marie Laveau. She was a woman who always sought to help others and improve their circumstances through her work. Even though she is no longer with us in life, her spirit remains powerful—and she can still help those who call upon her with respect and sincerity.

Simple Candle spell for money + Storytime

Hello everyone. Today I want to talk about money drawing work. 

I know in today’s climate, things are more expensive, and the financial future seems very bleak, but within every negative situation, there is always a silver lining. 

So, I am going to detail a simple money drawing ritual that you can do to bring in a little more money, and also I am going to do a storytime to show you how this can work to improve your life. 

This story was from not too long ago, this was around June of 2021, and I was in a position where my finances were not the best, since it was COVID, my hours at work were reduced. I was feeling down, but then I remembered that I could try to change my situation. I decided to go to Walmart, and I bought a money candle, and these candles are very cheap; they cost about $1.25. I came back to my apartment, and I got to work. I got all of my supplies, which were the candle, Florida water, money drawing oil, brown paper bag, and a pencil. I wrote down my petition for the future, and this is important. I wrote: “I am thankful for my checking account having money within it, and me being able to pay my bills.” At that time, that wasn’t the case, but I had to have faith that with this candle work, my petition would manifest. The faith I need for the work to be successful is so that I would come into money, or at work, I would be able to have more hours available to me. I anointed the candle with the money-drawing oil. I went from the bottom of the candle all the way up to the top, to send my petition to the heavens. Then, I would place other items that display wealth and money, for example, I used a small golden fat Buddha statue, a dollar bill that has been blessed and anointed with oil, and some other things on my money altar. 

After I finish this, I will say some prayers, which are from the book of Psalms. I said Psalm 23, which is an all-purpose psalm, but it can be used for money drawing. I will call my spirits to help with the work. Then I started the ritual to bring in more money. When the ritual was done, I had faith that the candle work was successful, and then I forgot about it. A few days later, I had a random deposit in my checking account that I didn’t know was coming. This is something that I want for everyone who is reading: a way to create change in their lives, which can help them out in a moment of need. Now, what I am going to do is show the spell that I did all those years ago, which is simple but strong to bring in money. 

Here is what you are going to need: 

• A money candle

• Money drawing oil (Optional) 

• Brown Paper bag 

• A pencil

• Florida Water (Or you can use a water and salt mixture to cleanse your candle)

• A Bible

Steps: 

First, you are going to get your candle, and then you are going to clean it off. You want to do this because you want to remove any negativity that may be on the candle. If someone has touched the candle prior to you buying it, and they had negative energies, this is going to affect the candle spell. After that, you are going to place your items that have the energies of money on your altar. You are going to write and place your petition under your candle. If you are not using a glass candle, then you can use a candle holder to make sure that you are being safe when working with fire. Also, you can use incense, which I normally use for different types of work. I use a cinnamon incense because cinnamon is used to draw money, and with incense, it can bring spirits and energy around the candle work. Plus, it is alleged that incense carries your prayers and petitions to the heavens. 

So, you get all of your items together and place them on your altar. Next, you are going to knock on your altar 3 times to call your ancestors and spirits who are with you, so they can assist you with the work you are doing. You are going to say your prayers, and what I do is pray the 23rd psalm, which is a good psalm if you want to bring in more money. Once you finish this prayer or prayers, you are going to do the same routine where you go to your altar and light up the incense, and then you are going to say the prayer or prayers over your candle, and you are going to do this every day until the candle burns down. Once this is done, you should see more money coming in. There are many other spells or rituals that you can do to draw in more money, like putting pieces of cinnamon in your wallet or purse will bring in more money.

The Suits of Tarot

In Tarot, some suits are used to designate the different areas of life that are represented in the Tarot. Specifically, four suits talk about the different conditions that we go through.  

In this article, I am going to talk about the suit to give the reader a better understanding of them. This knowledge is important for you to become a proficient reader, so you will be able to help yourself or others. 

So, the different suits represent the different themes of Tarot, which we will go into later on in this article. I will now explain the different themes of what we need to understand. 

The suits represent the different elements in the tarot. They represent the situations and events that are daily occurrences or people within your life. Just because these cards represent smaller occurrences of daily situations, it does not mean that they are insignificant or something to not concern yourself with. The thing about the minor arcana is that you can see the energies of the day-to-day activities that are going on. So, now that I have mentioned the importance, I am going to talk about the 4 suits and the meaning behind them. 

Cups Suit

The cups within Tarot represent emotions and feelings. This is because the cups also represent water or water signs, and in astrology, the water signs are normally associated with feelings and emotions. When a cup card comes up in a Tarot reading, your spirits are giving the information that whatever pertains to your reading, there are influences of emotions, or there is an emotional decision that will need to be made. Whenever you see the cups within your reading, you can decide that the situation is based on emotion. Also, the cups are associated with intuition. Intuition is a very important sense that people do not pay attention to like they should. With the suit of the cups, through a single card or throughout a whole reading, you can see how intuition will play a role in the actions of a specific person. There is much more that I can write, but for now, this is a good stopping point for the suit of cups. 

Wands suit 

This represents inspiration and action; the wands also represent fire. When you see the wands in a Tarot spread, you can know that the situation you are dealing with will need some form of action or inspiration, or some form of creativity. Also, in some cases, the wands suit, for example, the Ace of Wands, can mean fertility. Whenever I see the wands in a Tarot reading, I know there is something that the querent is doing, and there will be a lot of energy and action involved, which is a positive indication that the person will be successful in their endeavor. The wands are a great suit to see, or it could be an indication that you will need to be motivated if you want to accomplish your goal. 

Swords suit 

The swords represent the mind, intellect, or spoken word; also the swords represent air. Whenever you see the swords within a tarot reading, you will be able to see what is going on in terms of intellect or things pertaining to the mind. Whenever I see the swords within a Tarot reading, I always know that there is a thought or something that is weighing down on the querent in a reading. This thought is something that needs to be handled, but the situation is not easy to handle. Also, when you see the swords in a reading, it could mean that the querent needs to be discerning and that they need to use their mind rather than their emotions when engaging in a situation. 

Pentacles Suit 

This represents all monetary or material matters. The pentacles also represent the element of earth. Wherever you see the pentacles when you are talking about things that are happening that will have an effect on things with money. Also, pentacles represent matters with work or your career. Seeing the pentacles in a tarot spread means that you are going to come into some money, or there is going to be an event that happens pertaining to material matters. 

So this explains the suits within Tarot. I hope that when you read this, you will be able to further your Tarot journey by understanding what the different suits mean.
