Days of Power in Hoodoo

Hello, in this article, I am going to talk about the important days of Hoodoo. I think it is essential to talk about days that can aid Hoodoo workers in strengthening their work.

I know some people who are reading may think, ‘Why does this matter?’ Well, the reason is that during certain periods of time, there is power on certain days where your magick and rituals can be increased to accomplish your goals. This is something I want new practitioners to know about because it can be a great benefit to know, and also knowing these days helps with developing a spiritual routine.

So, throughout a calendar year, there are a few days that are powerful to observe and to use to create powerful magick.

Halloween - October 31st

This one may throw people off a little because the spiritual practice of Hoodoo does not observe Halloween. However, spiritually, Halloween is a day of power for any spiritualist, and I know you’re reading this, saying, “What?” but just hear me out. Halloween is a day when the veil between humans and the spiritual world is the thinnest. This is the perfect time to connect to your spirits and to do spiritual work. The only thing I would caution you on is to strengthen your protections. The reason is that the veil is thin, and even if there are good spirits who are around you, there will also be negative spirits. Always be careful on days like these because many different spirits may not have the best intentions. In Hoodoo, you normally practice at night if you are throwing work out or you are cursing an enemy. Halloween is a great time to do this.

All Saints’ Day - November 1st

All Saints’ Day is powerful. This is a day in the Catholic church that celebrates all of the faithful spirits who have attained sainthood who are in heaven. This is a part of the trinity of Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. All Saints’ Day is a great chance to honor your ancestors and saints who are not with us anymore. Many people who are Catholic and Hoodoo practitioners will work on this day and honor their ancestors because of the synchronicity with the Catholic church, where they honor saints. Some things you can do on this day are: you can leave food out for your ancestors on your altar, or you can pray for them. In Hoodoo, normally, the people who practice go to the grave site of the departed and clean up and prepare the gravestones.

All Souls’ Day - November 2nd

This is a day that is not recognised in Hoodoo, but if you are a Hoodoo practitioner who is Catholic, then you know this is a day when you pray for your ancestors who are in purgatory; you are praying for them to be able to get into heaven faster. All Souls’ Day is a day that I use to honor my spirits, to give them foods that my family has made for generations. Also, I give them drinks that they like, some drinks that I give are rum, whiskey, and other drinks like Coca-Cola. The point of this day is to honor your spirits who are gone. I would like to mention that on this day, don’t ask your ancestors for anything, just give them thanks and offerings. That would be like you being asked for a favor on your birthday. That is crazy work lol.

New Year’s Eve - December 31st

New Year's Eve is a day for many people of all different cultures. This is a time when people prepare for New Year's Day. Personally, for New Year’s Eve, I get ready with cleansings and doing spiritual work like making a spiritual bath, and pulling cards to see how the year ahead is going to go. Cleansing yourself and your house is a form of road opening, so doing this along with other rituals is a great way to open your roads. Also, I cook the food I am going to eat for New Year’s like cornbread, black eyed peas, and collard greens. This is a staple meal in Hoodoo tradition to bring in good health and prosperity for the year. New Year's Eve is a great day to clean and prepare for the new year coming.

New Year’s Day - January 1st

New Year's is great because this is the day when you will do everything that you would want to do for the rest of the year. In terms of magick, I normally do a money drawing candle and another candle for protection. These are rituals that are easy to do, and it’s something I do every New Year to bring in continued blessings for the entire year. I always keep some physical money in my wallet, so I will have money for the rest of the year. I would have taken a spiritual bath sometime after 12 am, so I will come into the new year cleansed from anything in the past. These are some things that you can do as well to enhance the energies of this year. Some examples are manifestation and Feng Shui.

Good Friday (Easter) - April

Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified, and then on the third day, Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Jesus defeated death, and he came back. Good Friday and Easter, not only in Hoodoo, but in the Christian faith, are such important days. However, specifically, Good Friday is a day for cleansing by taking a spiritual bath. Also, you can use this day for readings and to see what is going to happen down the road. I like Good Friday because it is a day that is an annual reminder that springtime is coming. This is a time when we remember that Jesus was resurrected from the dead to defeat death. Also, there is a shift in the seasons from winter to spring, so this is also a shift in the energies of resurrection and growth.

Saint John the Baptist Day - June 24th

Saint John the Baptist’s day is a powerful day for spiritual workers. This day falls a few days after the summer solstice, and this is a powerful time in Hoodoo or any other type of spiritual practice to use the power during this time to make your work stronger. Collecting herbs, doing spiritual work, or communicating with your spirits are some of the ways that working on this day will help you. John the Baptist was a Jewish preacher who baptized Jesus. This was a powerful moment. With the symbols of fire and water, the fire being spiritual cleansing, and the water being a connection to the spirit. The path of Hoodoo deals with synchronicity, and being able to blend the spiritual elements of Christianity and the spiritual practice of Hoodoo, which uses elements of African spirituality. It creates the spiritual path of Hoodoo, so take advantage of this day and create magick.

Conclusion

In conclusion, these are all of the special days that you can observe in Hoodoo to honor your spirits and to empower your spiritual work. I wanted to give you information about these days, so you can develop a spiritual routine. Plus, for newcomers to Hoodoo, you know what days have an extra benefit. I will say this, Hoodoo across the South, and even all across the United States, has different types of methods. For example, conjure men and women who are in New Orleans are Catholics, so they work with saints, and conjure men and women from Georgia normally are Baptists, where they only work with their ancestors and God. So, what I am trying to say is, things change depending on the region where you are from, but all of these days that I listed, any spiritual worker can use to strengthen their work. I hope this article was informative. If you have any other questions, please feel free to leave a comment on something I might have missed. Thank you so much for reading!

Understanding Granny Magick, Left & Right Handed Spiritual Work

Hello, in this article I am going to talk about the difference between being a left-handed worker versus being a right-handed worker, also I will describe a third path, which is granny magick.

So, why am I talking about the different spiritual paths a worker can go down? This is because many people who are starting out are unsure of what type of worker they want to be, and I am here to demystify this process, so you can move forward with confidence.

So, let me define the first path of spiritual work: Granny magick.

What is granny magick? This is magick that does not involve cursing or anything like that. What granny magick is, it’s a form of magick that is “practiced by older women, or ‘grannies’, who serve as healers, mid-wives, and spiritual guides. Granny magick is also a term that can be used to describe people who perform healing magick. Instances of granny magick include making spiritual cleansing baths, readings or divination, and protective magick. Granny magick is used solely to help people; no form of cursing or negative magick is involved. An example of this is normally older spiritual workers whom people go to when they need help. They are called healers, and they would have expertise in herbal knowledge, which would be used to heal others. Also, granny magick workers would be used as an alternative to regular doctors. So, people who choose the path of granny magick are people who use their spiritual knowledge for the benefit of others. They will use their magick to help other people by creating spiritual baths, doing readings, or doing healing work with herbs and roots. The people who go down the path of granny magick do not curse or do aggressive spiritual work. We have gone down what granny magick is, now we will look at other spiritual paths people can choose.

Right-hand path (RHP) is a system where people work with spirituality and spirits, but they have a moral code on what is right and what is wrong. The right-handed worker believes that they should submit to a higher power, or a God. The ultimate goal is to be in alignment with a higher power. The right-handed worker believes in morality and that if you do a specific work, let's say, for example, a dominating work where you are controlling someone, the right-handed path worker will not do spiritual work like this because it takes away a person's free will. The spiritual work that a right-hand path worker would normally do would be a ritual to a God or deity to bring about the change they would like to see. For example, if a person is working with a Greek goddess like Aphrodite, if the person would want to bring more love into their life with the intercession of a goddess like Aphrodite to bring love into their life in an ethical way. The person would do this by doing a ritual, which consists of setting up an altar with flowers, sweets, and other offerings that Aphrodite would like. This work would cause Aphrodite to look favorably upon the spiritual worker and would likely result in her answering the spiritualist's request. So, many spiritual workers could be categorized in this way, and if you are starting out and you feel drawn to this type of magick, then maybe the right-hand path is better for you to try. Now, we are going to look at the left-handed path of magick.

Left-hand path (LHP), the left-hand path of magick differs from the right-hand path because, instead of working in more structured rituals, the left-handed worker will work based on the circumstances in which they are currently in. Also, the left-handed worker is a person who is not bound by feelings of ethics to an extent. For example, some spiritual workers do negative work, like cursing work. I know spiritual workers who will perform cursing or baneful work for either themselves or clients who need to defeat an enemy. I have seen work done for a client who had an abusive partner, and the spiritualist didn’t feel bad about the spell work of cursing the abuser because this person who came to me was in fear for their life, and something had to be done to stop the abusive partner. The cursing work was done, and the abusive partner had gone through a lot of hardships, and then left the relationship. So, people who want to work the left-handed path of magick would choose individuality, personal power, and growth. There is nothing wrong with this approach.

So, looking at the different paths of magick, you can see the types of magickal paths you can choose. No path is right or wrong; you have to find the best path for you and develop your spiritual practice. I hope reading this article helps you to decide what the best type of path is for you to go down. Thank you so much for reading!

Working with the Saints of Hoodoo

Hello all, in this article, I will be talking about the different saints of Hoodoo, which saints to work with, and how to develop a deeper relationship with the different saints you want to build a relationship with.

In Hoodoo, working with many different spirits is essential. There are many different types of spirits you can work with, but saints are very powerful intercessors to help your spiritual work come into fruition. It is important to mention that not every saint you can work with in regards to Hoodoo or spellwork; some saints are not commonly asked to intercede with spiritual matters, and others are very helpful in assisting spiritual workers.

So, let’s get started with understanding which spirits to work with and how you start the process of building a working relationship with them.

I want to start by telling a little story. There was a time many years ago when I was contacted by a person who needed some spiritual assistance. They were waiting on a payment that was being sent to them, but the time the payment would be sent out and processed would take weeks, and they had bills they needed to take care of. So, what I did was, immediately, I thought to ask for the intercession of Saint Expedite, who is a patron saint of fast and speedy results. I got to work, I got all of the supplies that I needed to begin the offering, and I will detail the information of the ritual, which is simple but effective. The work consists of a few things: you will need a red candle, and this could be a stick candle or a glass candle; it doesn’t matter, and you will need some red wine, a whole pound cake, and a picture or statue of Saint Expedite.

You begin by starting with the red candle. You will want to get a pencil and carve your name or the name of the person you are working for on the candle. You will then want to carve the petition on the candle if it is a pillar or stick candle; if it is a glass candle, you will get a brown paper bag and write out your name and the petition on the paper. You will then want to place all of the items on your altar and set them up in the order they need to be set in. You set these items up in a triangle, and you place the pound cake first as the tip of the triangle, then you place the candle on the left-hand side of the triangle, then you place the picture of Saint Expedite on the left side of the triangle, and you place the glass of red wine near the pound cake. You then light the candle and pray to Saint Expedite. There is a standard prayer which you can say:

“ Our dear martyr and protector, Saint Expedite, You who know what is necessary and what is urgently needed. I beg you to intercede before the Holy Trinity, that by your grace, my request will be granted. (Insert petition here) May I receive your blessings and favors. In the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

You are going to pray this every day until the candle burns down. While you are praying, you will want to believe that Saint Expedite is there helping you.

Now, going back to the story of my client who needed that money, I did this work, which I had started before, and the result was that they were able to receive their money faster than they would have normally gotten the money. Saint Expedite assisted me on behalf of my client. So, I hope this example shows that working with spirits can be a beneficial endeavor. However, I am going to go into other saints who are great to work with in Hoodoo.

Spiritual work I did for my client

Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel is a powerful spirit. He is an Archangel, and he is the patron saint of police, military personnel, and soliders. People often ask for his intercession when it comes to matters of protection. Saint Michael is an Angel for everybody to ask for his help or intercession. His feast day is September 29th, and offerings you can give him are prayer, a candle dedicated to him, or a glass of water. Here is the canon Catholic prayer to ask for the intercession of Saint Michael:

“Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the Heavenly Host - by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin and destruction of souls. Amen.”

Saint Cyprian and Saint Justina

Saint Cyprian is a saint who is not officially recognised by the Catholic church, but it is said that he was a very powerful sorcerer who saw a woman one day named Justina. Cyprian tried to use black magic to get Justina to be with him, but Justina, when she felt the influence of the black magic, she began to pray to God and ask for his intercession. Justina was able to overcome the influences of the black magic, and when that happened, Cyprian wanted to know how Justina overcame these influences, and she told him it was God, and Cyprian converted to Christianity. Cyprian is the patron saint of sorcerers and spiritual workers. You can ask him for his intercession if you have spiritual work you want to come into fruition, and be empowered. Their feast day is September 16, and offerings you can give them are incense, candles, and occult items.

Saint Peter

Saint Peter was one of the twelve apostles and was a leader of the Christian church. Saint Peter is seen as the patron saint of Road opening, unlocking the doors, and removing all blockage. Saint Peter is invoked when you need to overcome all evil and negativity. Also, you can call on Saint Peter if you need to do any road opening work; all you will need is a candle of his and some keys that represent opening roads. A good key that you can buy for a cheap price would be a skeleton key. Saint Peter’s feast day is June 29th, and offerings to him are prayers and donations made in his name.

Saint Anthony

Saint Anthony is the patron saint of lost objects, the poor, travelers, and many other things. I ask for the intercession of Saint Anthony for myself or for clients with whom I work for. Saint Anthony is someone who is a powerful person to work with if you need to find something or if you are traveling. His feast day is June 13th, and offerings you can give to Saint Anthony are water, some bread, or acts of charity.

Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, is a powerful saint to work with. In Hoodoo conjure men/women work with Saint Joseph if they need to find employment, or if you are a worker who needs help. Saint Joseph is also good to work with if you need to sell a house. This spiritual work normally consists of buying a small Saint Joseph statue and burying it upside down in the front yard of your house. When you sell the house, you want to give a small financial offering to him in the form of a donation. Saint Joseph's feast day is March 19th, and offerings to him are bread, flowers, and candles/prayers.

Saint Christopher

Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers and safe travel by land, sea, or air. If you or a person close to you is travelling, you can ask for the intercession of Saint Christopher. I ask for Saint Christopher’s help whenever I need assurance when I am traveling. Saint Christopher's feast day is July 25th, and offerings to him include giving a mass to a deceased person in the Catholic Church and praying.

Saint Martha the Dominator

Saint Martha the Dominator is the patron saint of domination, domestic workers, homemakers, cooks, and servants. However, Saint Martha can be called upon to help in the work of dominating a situation. There are stories where it is alleged that Saint Martha went to France and defeated a dragon. This was after the death of Jesus. She went to France and she was asked to slay a dragon, which she did by throwing holy water on it, and making the sign of the cross, which she was able to tie up the dragon with her girdle, and the townspeople were able to kill the dragon. You can call on Saint Martha whenever you need help with work in dominating a situation. Her feast day is July 29th, and offerings to her are statuettes, incense, oil, and perfumes.

Saint Barbara

Saint Barbara is the patron saint of soldiers, people who are in danger of thunderstorms, fire & explosions, and sudden death. In the spiritual practice of Santería, Saint Barbara is a representative of Chango. Saint Barbara was a martyr because of her desire to become a Christian in a time period of Greco-Roman faith. She did not renounce her faith, and it was her father who ended up killing her. Right after her father killed her, he was struck down by a bolt of lightning. Saint Barbara can be called upon for protection, love, or improving a person's health. Her feast day is December 4th, and offerings to her are bread or wheat, flowers, or devotional candles.

Saint Benedict

Saint Benedict is the patron saint of Europe, students, and a protector from black magic. Saint Benedict is a saint who can be called on to remove evil or witchcraft. Also, if you would like, Saint Benedict has very protective talismans, which you can purchase as a form of spiritual protection. Saint Benedict was canonized by Pope Honorius III. You can call for the intercession of Saint Benedict in spirit work for protection from witchcraft and sorcery. His feast day is July 11th, and offerings to him are to give a mass for specific intentions.

Saint Rita

Saint Rita is the patron saint of impossible causes, marriage difficulties, widows, and the sick. She is a saint that you can call on, especially if there's a situation that is impossible that needs to be resolved. She can also be used for protection from domestic abusers and unfaithful partners. Her feast day is May 22nd, and offerings to give her are roses, prayer candles, and monetary donations to shrines or churches.

Saint Jude

Saint Jude is the patron saint of impossible cases and desperate situations, as well as Saint Rita. Saint Jude was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. Saint Jude is a saint whom anyone can call on for intercession if they have a situation that seems impossible or a case that seems desperate. Many people who are spiritualists, or even if they are not, can work with Saint Jude, and many people have seen good results. His feast day is October 28th, and offerings to give him are prayers to him, financial donations, or altars dedicated to him with flowers and food.

Anima Sola

Anima Sola is not a saint, but she is a figure in the Catholic church, and you can call for her assistance for help in love, money, and protection. She is said to have been, for lack of a better term, a water bringer to people who were crucified, and during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, she gave two of the other prisoners water, but neglected to give water to Jesus, and because of that, she was made to suffer in purgatory for eternity. Anima Sola does not have a feast day, but offerings to her are fresh flowers, a glass of water, or cinnamon.

This is not an exhaustive list; there are many other saints with whom you can work with to create changes in your life you wish to see. I wanted to give you a starting point, but it is up to you to do the research, and also to pick a saint or saints whom you want to work with. I hope this helps, and I want to say thank you for reading.
